A comcast contractor came to my door and asked for permission to dig up my
lawn to install some cable from one neighbor to another neighbor. I said ok.

What if I said no, what would they do? Can I barter with them for free cable
service?

They can almost certainly use the easement along your yard to lay cable, with
or without your permission ... and more than likely, that will appear to be in
your yard anyway. That installer was just trying to save cable distance and
make it easier.

In short, you would have achieved nothing with an attempt to bargain.

In most places, there are permanent utility easements for x-number of feet
in from each property line. If they were putting the line elsewhere, and
you had refused, they simply would have used those easements. If they were
in the easement area, they were just being polite in asking you if they
could dig there.

So unless your "lawn" is a few hundred acres, and running the cable across
your property saved them a few miles, the likely reaction to attempting to
negotiate some kind of agreement would be rolling eyes, followed by some
official notification that they'd be digging up part of their easement.

Back around 1979 or 1980 in Phoenix Viacom wanted to lay cable down the
street side of my neighborhood because the utility rightaway <SP> was in
the back yards that were all fenced with no alleyway. Every owner
occupied home managed to get something from the cable company and all
yards were put back into original or better condition when they were
done. A few people got 6 months of free cable and two of us had them
trench for sprinkler systems. They came in and removed the sod and saved
it, later replacing it as they finished each set of yards. They removed
the sod and started trenching with a ditch witch Monday, trenched
Tuesday and Wednesday AM, laid the cable Wednesday PM & Thursday and
replaced the dirt and sod Friday on my long block. The following two
weeks they tunneled under the street from each box and put in boxes
across the street.

work out of them and the job will be crap. Some companies would rather hire a
whole lot of crap and then fix issues as they arise rather than to do it right
in the first place .... that is how I make my living, I sell myself as doing
work that is NOT crap.

Having said that, I did inspect one point in my yard after the bury crew came
by and the cable was at least 6 inches down ... I didn't dig it up, I just
shoved a stick down there until I found it.

have no doubt many if not most cables are lurking just below the sod in
numerous places. The reality is most of the contractors used by Comcast and
others just slap the cable down in whatever slit they manage to create with
the modest walk-behind machines that they use...

As far as I know national building and utility codes require buried
cable to be a minimum of 6" deep, or below the frost line whichever is
deeper. A call to code enforcement at whatever authority issues
construction permits is in order should you have anyone bury cable on
your property that does not follow those guidelines.


FYI: My aerator has 3" tines. Anything less than 2" would produce
unsatisfactory results.
