Discussion:
Someone (Xfinity?) Changed My Password
(too old to reply)

At 12:50 today, I received an email from Xfinity (alerts.comcast.net),
"Please reset your Xfinity password". The body of the email gave
instructions on how to reset my password.

At 12:50 today, I received a second email from Xfinity
(alerts.comcast.net), "Your password is all set". The body of the email
said my password was successfully reset, but that if I was not aware of
this change, call 1-800-xfinity.

Yep, my password had been changed, because I couldn't get into my
account, neither the web email/account, nor my client email account.

I called and eventually was able to get a live person, semi-
understandable person. But, she could only tell me how important
security was to Xfinity and that the first email was asking me to reset
my password. It took a long while for her to understand that I didn't
reset my password. When she did, she transferred me to 'security'.

The security person was even less understandable, but did understand the
issue. She had no idea what had happened, but we did reset my password.
She said either Xfinity made a mistake, or someone else got my password
and changed it. I vote for the former.

Has anyone had this happen to your Xfinity account? Any ideas what
happened?

TIA

Not in 4 years. Other things, but not changing password for account.
Do you have some 2nd contact info like a 2nd email or cell #, usually that's what is used when doing
these things by some outside person. But if you lean towards Xfinity 'oops' then even that doesn't
help.

I don't have a non-Comcast email for Comcast to contact me, but Comcast
does have my cell number on the account, and that's what they use to do
2FA.

Thanks for the reply.

I hope you didn't re-set your account to use the same password that was
mysteriously changed. And, I'd change any other account for which you
might have used that same, mysteriously changed password (I know, we all
are told never to use the same password on another account but old
habits die hard!)

They have been annoying me to change mine to get access to email or hot
spot on my cell phone but I have been ignoring them as there is no
problem on desk top, lap top or tablet. I got a gmail account just if I
want to use email on phone which I practically never do.

So I changed it and had to go through two factor authentication with
cell phone. Now they are making it a PITA to set email up on my laptop,
tablet and phone.

Every time I setup google drive, google calendar, Yahoo, Doctor portal logins, etc, I have to go
through this 2FA. I guess it's for the good, I don't need some outside entity getting to my stuff.

I wonder how people without a phone do these things. I guess voice calls or email.

People that hold my 401k started requiring 2FA and said email is not
secure. I was getting calls on home phone but they would not work and I
had to set up my cell phone which is normally off when I am home.

I was able to set up laptop but phone and tablet elude me. I am tempted
to just switch all to gmail and not put up with this crap.

You are likely to be sorry if you don't use all the tools made available
by the financial institutions you use to secure your account(s). With
all the data breaches that have already happened and new ones being
reported almost every day, it's likely that at some time in the future
you'll find that you've had an uninsured (or underinsured) account
hacked and you've sustained a considerable financial loss. I agree it
is a pain when you can't provide 2FA via e-mail and normally use a land
line and normally keep your cell phone turned off. (I do the same.)
However, I had a rude awakening several years ago when the IRS refused
to accept my electronic tax return and told me that I had already filed
and a refund had been processed and provided. I immediately put a
credit freeze on my data at all of the credit reporting agencies.
Fortunately, to my knowledge none of my accounts have been hacked.
Since then, I feel I need to be very observant of all activity on all my
accounts, change passwords frequently, and use 2FA whenever it's available.

All true and I do not do online banking with these concerns.

Some websites are not set up right like with my 401k was and 2FA made it
worse. They had been emailing that I could get my 1099 from them for
download but it would not download. Took a call to them to find out my
Firefox browser would not work and I had to use Chrome. It had taken
them nearly 2 months to replace my home phone number with my cell phone
number for 2FA. Been thinking of changing my 401k provider.
